Shaw Festival production and Ensemble members in the run for 2012 Dora Mavor Moore Awards

Accolades from the Toronto theatre scene reached across Lake Ontario with the announcement of the 2012 Dora Mavor Moore Awards nominations. The Shaw Festival learned yesterday the 2011 production of Topdog/Underdog, presented in association with Obsidian Theatre Company, received four nominations.

The critical and audience favourite Topdog/Underdog received nominations for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction of a Play or Musical (Philip Akin) and two nominations in the Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role category (Kevin Hanchard and Nigel Shawn Williams). The Shaw Festival extends its congratulations to these “Topdogs”.

The Shaw also extends its best wishes to all the nominees, especially current Ensemble members Nicole Underhay, Jim Mezon, Judith Bowden, Bonnie Beecher, Alan Brodie and John Gzowski.

The upcoming Shaw Festival production of His Girl Friday features four Dora nominees: Jim Mezon directs Nicole Underhay and Kevin Hanchard, with music composition and sound design by John Gzowski. Jim Mezon will also be seen in the Martha Henry-directed production of Hedda Gabler.

The 33rd annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards ceremony will be hosted by Thom Allison, currently garnering rave reviews as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the Shaw Festival’s production of Ragtime, on Monday, June 25, 2012 at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto.

The Shaw Festival’s season began April 10, runs until October 28 and proudly features 11 productions presented on the Festival’s four Niagara-on-the-Lake stages.
